OK, I missed the Phoenix, Arizona shin-dig on MS Project 2010. However, “I am MS Project 2010 ready, are you?” I would have loved to have climbed Camelback or wander around Scottsdale, had I gone to the Conference ….
Still, the MS Project 2010 client and server product have evolved in a very positive and robust sort of way!
Prior to 2010, not much change or improvement occurred, to the client application, for many, many years. With the new 2010 client version, however, there are now three (3) profound improvements: 1.) Timeline Feature; 2.) Team Builder; and, last but not least, 3.) Interface improvements.
While the interface improvements are very welcome and, shall I say, long overdue, the Timeline and Team Builder improvements are most profound, for a variety of reasons! For example, Timelines are way coolio for executive presentation, and can actually be based on thorough and elaborate task/resource hierarchies. You may shield, time pressed Senior Executives, from plan minutiae, unless they specifically ask for it. I can’t tell you how much time I have wasted creating that meaningful, one page, Gantt, 8.5″ X 11, landcape, Executive Summary. Now it’s just two (2) circles and a Snap! (I wish I had this in the old days, while consulting with very mission-oriented and, shall I say picky, Navy Admirals?)
Are you familiar with this? Check it out:
Certainly a nice Gantt and PERT alternative!
Also, suffice it to say, resource management is way more of a breeze! Moreover, top->down and/or bottom->up planning is just more joyful!
In a later post, perhaps I will comment on Team Builder or the new Portfolio Server integration into Project Server! Or, maybe, why the new MS Sharepoint :: Project Server integration and collaboration capabilities have the potential to create tremendous enterprise value.
Good Stuff!!!
